Fathers and Kids weekend

The mothers had a weekend off as the Romsey Round Table fathers took the kids to the seaside camping for the weekend. A trip to the beach and crabbing followed by BBQ and a beer was the recipe for a great weekend.

A trip to the Rose Bowl gave Romsey Round Table the chance to see Hampshire get stuffed (again). Oh well there is always next year.

Tim's top of the table

Romsey Round Table recently welcomed their new chairman. Peter Robinson, chairman for the last year, is succeeded by Tim Hilton, who was elected at the recent AGM.

During the last year, Romsey Round Table has made donations or around £6,500 to local schools and charities, including Chatterbox pre-school, Romsey Community pre-school, Wellow Primary school, and the Hampshire Autistic Society.

Romsey Round Table also organised a barn dance held ay Michelmersh Barns, in aid of local charity Romsey Carers, which proved to be a real success, attracting more than 100 people.

Peter described this event as "Romsey Round Table in all its aspects: fun, fellowship and fundraising."

Mr Robinson will remain a key figure in Romsey Round Table as he has agreed to be membership secretary.

During his year as chairman, Tim Hilton has set his sights on further charitable events, and in response to the large influx of new members, to actively involve all of the newer Tablers within the running of the organisation.

Commenting on his upcoming year, Tim said: "I'm honoured and delighted to accept the position of chairman in what will be an exciting and challenging year for Romsey Round Table. While economic conditions may be difficult, we must never forget the needs of those less fortunate than ourselves. If we can provide some help and have some fun on the way then the whole community benefits."

Rib Trip to Isle of Wight

Romsey Round Table enjoyed, what has become tradition, a day out on the Solent. The event was fully booked as usual. Many thanks to Nigel Meek (and friends) for letting us use their boats.

A few of the lads (some of them far too old) had a go at the donut. Impressive to see how well they hung on at high speeds. The evening was rounded of with Fish and Chips in Cows.

Visit to Tesco

Romsey Round Table had a tour around one of Tesco's distribution centre on June 12th. The local manager explained all the different metrics used to measure efficiency and showed all the different compartments on site, including the freezer. People left the room feeling reasonably cold all over.

It was amazing to see the amount of work involved in getting your sausages delivered in time for the weekend BBQ.

What kind of vegetable is that ? There were numerous speculation among the group what it could possible be used for (except eating).

New members joining

Romsey Round Table recently concluded a very successful year for our chairman Alan Thompson. He wrapped his year by inducting 3 new members, including Andrew Moloney, Kevin Jakeman and Gareth Pritchard. We look forward to their presence and participation in our events this year. Tradition implies that a half yard of ale should be consumed as quickly as possible. Let us just say some were quicker than others.

Ladies Night 2007

This year's ladies night were successfully held at Potters Herron hotel in Ampfield. More than 100 people enjoyed themselves while having an outstanding 3-course meal. The evening raffle raised over #500 for XLP Research. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Traditionally this evening plays tricks with the table chairman - no different this year. Our chairman, Alan Thompson, found himself exposed in many ways and many thanks to Peter Robinson for pulling this together as well organising the entire evening.

Following the dinner a cabaret took place which exposed many table members dressed up as woman. Unfortunately pictures from the night cannot be published for legal reasons. However below is a paparazzi photo taken from the training session the night before. What a nice bunch of ladies that is.

10 Pin Bowling

On 10th February, 15 members of Romsey Round Table were joined by three members from Kenilworth Round Table (Warwickshire) for a 10 Pin Bowling Competition. The competition started well but the scores deteriorated as more beer was consumed. By the end, Tony Godleman (pictured) lacked the capacity to stand to roll his balls down the alley.

However, Paul Smith from Kenilworth RT eventually emerged as overall winner and was presented with a bottle of champagne. We also presented Paul and his two visiting friends with a case of ale from the Hampshire Brewery as a memento of their visit.

Slot Car Racing

On January 23rd Romsey Round Table had an evening of slot car racing (i.e. Scalextric) at the Millstream model centre in Ringwood. What was set out to be an evening of fun, soon became a fierce battle to win the competition. The format of the race involved several heats where in the end, each member had raced one heat on each lane of the track.

After an hour of racing, with a fish & chips stop in the middle, Stephen Webb emerged as the winner having completed most laps. Congratulations to Stephen and thanks to Simon Haythornthwaite for organising the event. The evening continued at a pub nearby.

December Christmas Fundraising 2006

Romsey Round Table have been busy all throughout December raising money for local charities and good causes including the Wessex Cancer Trust, and the Romsey Centre Pre-school. Many children on the streets of Romsey and Chandlers Ford have seen Father Christmas and his sleigh.

In total we raised #3370! Many thanks to everyone who supported this effort and donated money.

Charter Night - 13th October 2006

On Friday 13th October, Romsey Round Table celebrated its 51st Birthday at its Charter Night celebration dinner at Keats restaurant.

Over 30 current and past Romsey Round Table attended what turned out to be a fantastic evening. Daverio once again provided an absolutely outstanding meal and as usual, he and his team provided excellent service.

After dinner, the assembled throng were entertained by radio journalist Adam Kirtley. Adam is a regular correspondent on Radio 4's You & Yours and presents Five Live Money, and Business News on Radio 2 and News 24. He provided a fascinating insight into the world of local and national radio and also had some very interesting tales to tell about some very well known radio and television personalities!

New Milton In&Out - 16th September 2006

A group of proud Romsey Tablers set of to Hobourne Bashley to defend the honour in this years In&Out. This event begun by New Milton Round Table many years ago as a way of bringing all the tables from the area together for an evening of fun and entertainment. The evening is a competition between the attending tables based on a variety of games with the theme of inside and outside, hence the name In&Out. The competition is extremely fierce for the right to take home the trophies for a year.

Family Day - 16th July 2006

To celebrate the three peaks challenge success a family day at The Vine in Ower was organised. This was a very successful (and hot) Sunday afternoon - thanks to Darren Billingsley for organising it. The venue included a bouncy castle, BBQ, games, Romsey Fire Brigade and the Romsey Old Cadets. Some of the children also enjoyed having their faces painted.

Chairman Alan Thompson took the opportunity to present the check to Naomi House. The final sum came to £16.000!! The three peaks challenge effort can now be concluded as one of the most well planned and executed charity raising projects in the history of Romsey Round Table.

All involved feel very proud. Special thanks to Alan Thompson who set out the challenge in the beginning of the year, and has been instrumental in ensuring milestones were met.

Rib Trip - 11th July 2006

On July 11th Romsey Round Table repeated the success from last year and set off for another rib trip on the Solent. It was a hot summer night with temperatures reaching high 20s. One or two bottles of beer was consumed while going slowly through the speed restricted passage of Hamble - then it was no holding back. Passengers was encouraged to store all items away in lockers as we gained speeds up to 40 knots. For first timers, it was a shock to the system!

A number of activities was organised through the night, including swimming and donut riding. The highlight of the evening was a spectacular induction of Joachim Behrens. It will go into history as one of the more exciting ways of inducting a new member. In the middle of Solent a half yard of ale was consumed in new record time.

Please join us in welcoming Joachim to Romsey Round Table.

The evening was rounded off with fish and chips in Cows. Thanks to Nigel Meek (and friends) for organising the evening.

Area One Meeting - 13th June 2006

Romsey Round Table 484 attended the first of this years Area One meetings which got off to a great start at Winchester Great Hall with over 80 Tablers including the National President, Richard Du Bois, reciting the “Aims and Objects” of Round Table while standing under the Medieval Round Table from which our movement gained it’s emblem.

After an informative talk by a custodian of the Great Hall the meeting walked a short distance to the Ghurkha Museum where we were treated to traditional Nepalese beer and curries within the prestigious Macdonald Room.

During the meal the continuing increase in membership was underlined by the induction of Darren Billingsley by the National President, Richard Du Bois.

Powergen Cup Final

On 9th April Romsey Round Table and their families traveled to Twickenham to watch and support the Powergen Cup final between the London Wasps and the Llanelli Scarlets. Although the weather was not on our side we all enjoyed the day out. Thanks to Alan Thompson for organising the day.
